Adam P. Arkin is honored for his work spanning theory, computation, and experiment in three interrelated areas, whose common thread is advancing understanding in the synthetic design principles of cells, and help solve environmental and bioenergy problems. His work includes using comparative functional genomics to discover and understand the key subsystems in cells that allow them to survive and transform the environment, and to adapt and evolve to new circumstances; using systems biology to understand the biophysical, dynamical, and control/information aspects of cellular network operation in uncertain environments and when modified for applications; and using synthetic biology for efficient and predictable engineering of new function in cells.
