Emilie Hill enjoyed her work with Congresswoman Susan Davis’ office so much that she continued working as a member of her staff until the Congresswoman retired in 2021. After engaging in trauma-informed educator certification during her Fellowship, Emilie decided to return to the education sphere as a Restorative Justice Teacher Advisor at Van Nuys High School. In August 2016, Emilie helped open California’s first public all-girls STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) school, Girls Academic Leadership Academy (GALA), Dr. Michelle King School for STEM where she served as the Science Department Chair and taught chemistry, physics, and engineering. Prior to opening GALA, Emilie spent nine years teaching chemistry, physics, and environmental science at John Marshall High School. Emilie attended Pepperdine University where she earned a B.S. in Chemistry, and later earned a M.S. in Education Administration from California State University, Fullerton. In addition to her on campus duties, Emilie is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Science Leadership Team as well as the Social Emotional Leadership Cadre, with which she develops curriculum and provides professional development workshops for teachers across the country’s second largest school district. In 2015, Emilie was honored as a Master Teacher in Chemistry by the National Education Association (NEA) through their BetterLesson project, providing model lessons, and she continues to develop Next Generation Science Standards aligned training and curriculum to support other teachers. One of Emilie’s favorite honors was getting to work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Spallation Neutron Source for two weeks as part of the Science Teachers as Researchers program. Emilie has advocated for teacher and student voice in policy making through the NEA/Teach Plus Future of the Profession Fellowship, Teach Plus Los Angeles Teaching Policy Fellowship, Educators 4 Excellence, and as a member of the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) House of Representatives. Emilie is a graduate of the Emerge California Candidate Training Class of 2021 and is planning to run for elected office in the not-too-distant future where she hopes to continue improving student outcomes, supporting families, and impacting lives for the better.
