Joanna Hubbard

Joanna Hubbard has taught Integrated Science 8 as part of a 4-person, middle school team at Nicholas J. Begich Middle School – a Title 1, grades 6-8, 1000+ student school – in the Anchorage School District in Anchorage, Alaska for the past five years. Joanna is serving her fellowship in the US House of Representatives in the Office of Mike Honda (California 17th District).
Previously, Ms. Hubbard provided science curriculum and instructional support across her 50,000-student public school district in grades K-12 as a Science Teacher Expert. As well as being involved in the advancement of science education across Alaska, at the national level Ms. Hubbard has been a faculty member of the National Science Resource Center’s Strategic Planning Institute since 2009, working with the leadership teams of districts, states, and countries to improve science education in their regions of influence. Ms. Hubbard is proud to be one of the charter members of the Polar Educators International professional organization, serving on the planning committee for two years and advising the first council on their strategic plan.
Ms. Hubbard has a M.S. in Science Education from Montana State University at Bozeman and received her A.B. from Dartmouth College with majors in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology and in Studio Art.
Ms. Hubbard was honored to receive the 2011 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching for Alaska. Also in 2011, she received the Antarctic Service Medal of the United States of America for her work based at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, as an outreach educator with the Antarctic Drilling program during the 2007-08 field season.
